BEGINNING.

Porxos del Port is the Association of merchants and residents of Pla de Palau, who have joined forces to regain the original prominence of the set of buildings with a porch structure known as Porxos d’en Xifré and Vidal Quadras. Porxos d’en Xifré is an Elizabethan-style building that represents an example of Barcelona’s neoclassical architecture. He was commissioned by Josep Xifré i Casas, an Indian who had made a fortune in Cuba and New York and was considered the richest man in the city.

The building was conceived as a set of ten independent houses with their own staircase and a central courtyard, but with a homogeneity provided by the porches of the façades of Pla de Palau and Passeig d’Isabel II. Josep Buxareu and Francesc Vila were the architects of the building, which was perfectly integrated into the urban planning of the city designed by the engineer Josep Massanès and was the first in all of Barcelona to have drinking water thanks to some deposits located on the roof. In fact, these deposits inspired teenager Pablo Picasso, who used them as a model to paint his first oils while living in one of these houses in Barcelona. Even more curious is the fact that the houses known as Cases d’en Xifré were the first building in the Iberian Peninsula to be photographed. It was not a random decision, since at that time it was one of most modern and for that reason it was chosen in 1839 by Ramon Alabern, and other members of the Real Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona, to realize the first Daguerreotype .

On the other hand, Porxos d’en Xifré are not the only porches in Pla de Palau. In 1839, the Vidal-Quadras brothers, who also made a fortune in Cuba, bought a plot of land on Paseo de Isabel II and commissioned Antonio Rovira Riera to build a building in the same style as Xifré’s houses. Thus was born the construction, which occupies the whole island of houses with porches of thirteen arches plus one on each side. Five years after its construction, the brothers opened “La Casa de Banca Vidal y Quadras”, as they established themselves as bankers specializing in foreign exchange trading and commercial securities with the provinces.

Both Porxos d’en Xifré and Casa Vidal Quadras are protected as a cultural asset of local interest and make up numerous emblematic commercial and hotel establishments in Barcelona.
